Description

Monumental Antique Cast Iron Koken Sidewalk Barber Pole
This massive solid cast iron pole is a rare sidewalk monument barber pole. It bears a small brass plaque with "Patented Feb 1908, Koken Companies, Inc - St. Louis, U.S.A." on the front of the base.
This piece has no porcelain or moving parts - it was simply made to signify that a barber shop was available somewhere within a certain commerce center. These were often put out front of bus and train stations, especially ones in large cities where visitors would be unfamiliar with the terrain.
It is actually made of about 10 individually cast pieces that have been bolted together. The piece is in good to very good shape, having been recently repainted following the original pattern, and re-bolted. There was one small section missing but the pole was able to be properly assembled without it. It stands 102" high and is 12" in diameter. The upper globe has a 10" diameter and the base is 16" long by 16" wide. It weighs approximately 175 - 200 lbs. Please consult images and message with any questions.
