    Description

    Up for auction is a
Pre-1945 German Export Brass Pocket Dry Compass w/ Green Glow-in-the-Dark Spots. There are five of these green spots on the face of the compass, one for each of the four directions and one for magnetic North. This compass accurately points to North. On the face it is marked Germany, and was probably made for the export marker. It has a 1 5/8" diameter and is 1/2" thick. It weighs less than an ounce. It has a beveled glass crystal/cover that has been protected and is free of any scratches, chips or cracks.
Among the Four Great Inventions, the magnetic compass was first invented as a device for divination as early as the Chinese Han Dynasty (since c. 206 BC), and later adopted for navigation by the Song Dynasty Chinese during the 11th century. The first usage of a compass recorded in Western Europe and the Islamic world occurred around 1190.

This palm sized brass compass is in good, used cosmetic and functioning condition. The face of the compass is in very good, clean condition and free of any blemishes. The lever on the side of the body that is the locking mechanism for the pointer arrow works fine, to keep the pointer from being jostled around when not in use.  The round cap and base both have faint circular milling patterns. The hinge is square and solid and works fine. The green glow-in-the-dark spots, when charged with a bright light bulb, only have a strong glow for a couple of seconds. Which is probably good news since that tells me the remaining radiation in the paint is minimal.  There is some surface oxidation on the inside of the cap.
